What is the difference between a MOSFET and an IGBT?

Can I replace MOSFET with IGBT?

No, but you can build one from a MOSFET – Wikipedia and a Bipolar junction transistor – Wikipedia (BJT). The real IGBT structure is different, it's based on the Thyristor – Wikipedia structure. However, thyristor operation is suppressed. For all intents and purposes it works like a transistor.

Why is IGBT used in an inverter instead of MOSFET?
